Black Mold Growth In Homes

Stachybotrys, also commonly known as black mold, can generally be found growing outside on decomposing organic materials. However, if it is found inside buildings, it must be dealt with immediately to stop it from proliferating.

Should you ever come across mold, you might be wondering what kind of mold you have, as not all mold is the same.

What Black Mold Looks Like In Dry and Wet Environments

Black mold will typically be either dark brown or black in color and have a slimy texture to it in very moist atmospheres. However, it can appear light gray in dry environments.

Bear in mind that various kinds of mold look alike but, most especially, mold found inside buildings. For that reason, you must get it tested to find out what it is, as black mold causes serious health problems.

When you know what kind of mold you are dealing with, you can take the necessary precautions and come up with a treatment plan for it.

Black Mold: What It Needs To Flourish and Proliferate

Black mold must have several things if it’s to survive and thrive. These are:

– Moisture

– Nutrients source

– Right temperatures

– Time

Mold thrives in high humidity and water that has accumulated. Once the growing process begins, it won’t need near as much moisture and can even grow when conditions are dry.

Hay, straw and wood are wonderful mediums for black mold to thrive on because of their nutrient base. Homes that have suffered from flood and water damage are often prime candidates for mold.

However, using ceiling tile, drywall, insulation backing, wallpaper or anything similar with paper in it can help stave the growth of black mold.

The majority of molds take several days to grow and can be seen in a matter of days. Black mold, on the other hand, takes several weeks to get a strong hold on the environment they are in. However, even if you don’t see it, it doesn’t mean you’re not any less vulnerable to it.

When mold is dry, it can easily spread throughout an area. Humid mold, on the other hand, has a difficult time spreading. Should you inhale this form of mold, either in your mucosal membranes or lungs, you’ll have a major health crisis to deal with.

How Do You Get Rid Of This Kind Of Mold In Your Home

When you notice this mold in minute amounts, be sure you wash down the area using either soap and water or a bleach solution. When cleaning the mold off, wear a respiratory mask so you don’t breathe in the spores.

You can find this cleaning equipment in a medical supply store. However, if you have allowed the mold to proliferate, it would be in your best interest to call someone who understands how to clean it up.

Black mold along with other variations of it can cause several respiratory illnesses like allergies and asthma. If you believe it’s the reason for your health problems, you should be seen immediately by a doctor. Be sure, when you clean up the black mold, to dress appropriately since it’s best way to keep from getting sick.
